BEE's New Ceiling Fan Star Ratings (2026–2028): How to Read the Label Before You Buy

BEE's revised ceiling fan star table applies from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028. What service value means, the 5-star thresholds by sweep, and how to read the label.

Fans run for most of the year in Jharkhand and Bihar, often for 10 to 12 hours a day in summer. That makes the fan one of the quietest but steadiest items on your electricity bill. From 1 January 2026, the star label on ceiling fans follows a revised table from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). Here is what changed and how to use the label when you buy.

What the star rating measures

Ceiling fans are a mandatory star-labelled product under BEE's Standards & Labelling programme. The rating is based on service value: how much air the fan delivers (in cubic metres per minute) for every watt it consumes. Higher service value means more air for the same electricity.

The 2026–2028 table at a glance

According to the Indian Fan Manufacturers' Association, which reproduces the BEE table, these thresholds apply from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028. They depend on the fan's sweep (blade diameter):

  • 600 to 750 mm: 1 star from 2.0, 5 stars at 4.0 or more.
  • 750 to 1050 mm: 1 star from 3.6, 5 stars at 5.6 or more.
  • 1050 to 1500 mm (this includes the common 1200 mm fan): 1 star from 4.5, 5 stars at 6.5 or more.

Each star step in between is 0.5. So a "5-star" fan in the 1200 mm size must deliver at least 6.5 cubic metres of air per minute per watt under test conditions.

How to read the label in the shop

  • Check the number of stars and the period the label is valid for. The new table runs until 31 December 2028.
  • Look at the sweep, the rated air delivery and the input power. Comparing service value is fairer than comparing watts alone.
  • Compare fans of the same sweep. A small fan and a large fan are rated against different thresholds.
  • Ask for the BIS (ISI) mark too. Fans are tested to IS 374:2019.

Where BLDC fans fit in

BLDC (brushless DC) fans use an electronically controlled motor instead of a conventional induction motor. They generally draw less power for similar air delivery, which is why many of them fall in the higher star bands. Don't assume, though. Always check the actual label on the model you are buying.

ATRICL supplies Khul BLDC fans as an authorised brand across Jharkhand and Bihar. For the star rating of a specific Khul model, please check the BEE label on the product or ask us for the current model's details. We don't want to quote a number here that may differ from the box in your hand.
