Cable Selection Basics for Project Procurement

From schedule discipline to environment, documentation and WhatsApp enquiry checklists.

Cable selection sits at the centre of every electrical project BOM. Get it wrong and you face voltage drop problems, overheating, failed inspections, or expensive rework after trays are already installed. This article is written for contractors, project engineers and procurement officers buying power and control cables for sites in India — with practical notes relevant to industrial and commercial work around Ranchi, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Separate design decisions from purchase decisions

Cable sizing (sq.mm, cores, voltage grade, insulation type) is primarily a design responsibility. Procurement’s job is to buy exactly what the approved schedule says — or to flag when site conditions make that schedule impractical. Do not let a dealer “suggest a cheaper size” without written design approval.

When you inherit a vague indent (“4 core copper cable for motor”), push back for:

  • Exact cross-section and conductor material
  • Voltage grade
  • Insulation / sheath type and armouring if required
  • Approximate length and whether cut lengths or full drums are preferred
  • Installation method (tray, buried, conduit, outdoor)

Current-carrying capacity is only the starting point

Ampacity tables assume defined installation conditions. Derating applies for grouping, ambient temperature, soil thermal resistivity (for buried cables), and enclosure. Industrial sheds in Jharkhand summers can be hot under the roof — if cables run in densely packed trays, the effective capacity drops. That is why copying an old project’s cable size without checking the new route is risky.

Voltage drop

Long feeder runs to remote pump houses, yard lighting DB or boundary cabins need voltage drop checks, not only thermal capacity. If motors struggle to start at the far end, the cable — or the transformer tap / source — may be wrong.

Short-circuit withstand

For larger feeders, the cable must survive the fault energy until the upstream device clears. This is another reason not to casually downsize.

Power vs control vs building wires

Keep categories clear on the PO:

  • Power cables — feeders and distribution between boards and larger loads
  • Building wires — final circuit wiring inside conduits / casing as per design
  • Control cables — multicore signalling between MCC, interlocks and instruments

Mixing these on one vague line item causes delivery of the wrong construction. Label each BOM line with application.

Environment and mechanical protection

Ask whether the cable needs armour for mechanical protection, UV-resistant sheath for outdoor runs, or special considerations for oily / chemical areas. Yard lighting and perimeter CCTV power often share outdoor routes — plan glands, bends and support early so cable type matches the route.

During monsoon months in eastern India, store drums under cover and keep end-caps sealed. Wet drums and damaged outer sheaths become punch-list items at handover.

Documentation that speeds inspection

Sites increasingly ask for manufacturer test certificates, packing lists matching drum numbers, and clear metre markings. Even when not contractually mandatory, having paperwork ready reduces arguments with consultants. For GeM or institutional purchases, align catalogue text with what the indent actually requires — do not assume a generic description is enough.

Procurement workflow that reduces rework

  1. Freeze the cable schedule from the approved drawing revision.
  2. Add 5–10% contingency only where the project allows (or buy exact + documented spare length).
  3. Confirm drum lengths against pulling plans — short drums can multiply joints.
  4. Photograph delivered drum labels on receipt.
  5. Coordinate switchgear ratings with cable sizes before panels are closed.

Common mistakes we see on regional projects

  • Ordering aluminium where copper was specified (or the reverse) without a design change note
  • Ignoring gland size and board entry space until installation day
  • Underestimating control cable pairs for MCC upgrades
  • Buying “whatever is in stock” for emergency repairs without checking existing cable ID

For emergency replacements, cut a short sample or photograph the printed legend on the sheath and the termination before you call for supply.

How ATRICL helps (without overclaiming)

ATRICL supports cable category enquiries for industrial and commercial buyers across Ranchi, Jharkhand and Bihar. Share your schedule, city and delivery window. We do not invent brand partnerships or publish fake ampacity tables — we work from your specifications and clarify gaps before quoting.

FAQ

Can I select cable size only from motor kW?

Motor kW is an input, not the full answer. Starting method, length, ambient and grouping all matter. Use the approved design or ask the consultant.

Are longer drums always better?

Longer drums can reduce joints but are harder to handle on tight sites. Match drum length to pull sections.

What should be in a WhatsApp cable enquiry?

Size, cores, voltage grade, approximate metres, application, brand preference if any, and delivery location.

Joints, terminations and site quality

Even a correctly sized cable fails in service if terminations are loose, ferrules are wrong, or outdoor joints are poorly sealed. Procurement can help by including compatible glands and lugs on the same indent when the site team requests them, and by avoiding last-minute material substitutions that change outer diameter.

For repair work, cut back to sound insulation rather than reusing damaged ends. Keep a short spare length of critical feeder types in the store if your downtime cost is high — label it with size and voltage grade.

Aligning cable buys with switchgear and lighting schedules

When lighting upgrades and machine additions land in the same financial year, update the cable schedule as a controlled revision. Mixing leftover drums from unrelated jobs without verification is a frequent cause of mixed copper grades and wrong cores on site.

Colour coding and identification

Follow project specification for core identification. Retrofits should not invent new colour meanings mid-board. Tag both ends during pulls; unmarked multicore control cables create days of ringing-out later.
