Ranchi's LT Cable Upgrade: What JBVNL's Shutdowns Mean for Switchgear Buyers

JBVNL is replacing bare LT wires at about 600 Ranchi transformers. What the shutdowns mean for ACB, MCCB, MCB, RCCB and changeover buyers.

If you work in Ranchi, you have probably noticed planned shutdowns in several areas over the past few weeks. A lot of this is deliberate. Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd (JBVNL) has restarted a major low-tension (LT) network upgrade in the city. For panel builders, contractors and facility buyers, the practical question is not the cable itself. It is whether the switchgear on your side of the meter is ready for repeated mains-off and mains-on.

What JBVNL is doing

According to a Times of India report published on 22 September 2026, JBVNL has resumed infrastructure work in Ranchi under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The main part of the work is replacing bare LT wires with insulated cables.

  • Scale: JBVNL's General Manager for the Ranchi supply area board, Manmohan Kumar, said "around 600 transformers have been targeted for the conversion."
  • How shutdowns are done: Instead of switching off a whole feeder, JBVNL is shutting down only the transformer being worked on.
  • Outage length: Planned cuts run from two to six hours, depending on the work.
  • Areas named: Anantpur, Hinoo, Namkom, Chutia, Harmu, Kokar and Lalpur.
  • Timeline: The work ran in April and May, stopped during heavy rain from June to August, and has now restarted. JBVNL said it is "aiming to complete the work within two months."

JBVNL said it issues notices to warn consumers about power cuts in their area.

Why this shows up in the panel

Each notified shutdown is a full switch-off and switch-on at the buildings fed by that transformer. That cycle stresses the incomer, the protection devices and the changeover to generator or inverter backup. Bare overhead conductors are also easily disturbed by branches and accidental contact, which is one reason JBVNL is moving to insulated cables. The network upgrade does not replace worn or undersized gear inside the building.

On 12 September 2026, JBVNL also said it plans to set up at least five new substations in each assembly constituency. That is a longer distribution upgrade. The switchgear check below is useful now, in Ranchi and elsewhere in Jharkhand and Bihar. Source: Times of India, 12 September 2026.

What to check on the switchgear

Get a qualified electrician to inspect the board before or during the notified window. Typical points:

  1. Changeover switch. Confirm mains-to-backup changeover is the right rating, switches cleanly, and is not loose, pitted or forced by hand beyond its duty.
  2. Incomer: ACB or MCCB. On larger panels, check the air circuit breaker or moulded case circuit breaker for correct rating, tight terminals, and no signs of overheating.
  3. MCB. On final circuits, replace MCBs that trip without a real fault, run hot, or are clearly undersized for the load.
  4. RCCB. Test the residual current device with its test button, and replace units that do not trip or will not reset.
  5. After each restoration. Once mains returns, confirm the board is back on mains (not left on backup) and that protection devices have not been bypassed.

Where ATRICL helps: ATRICL is the Authorised Service Partner for C&S Electric in Jharkhand and Bihar. Core supply is C&S switchgear, including ACB, MCCB, MCB, RCCB and changeover switches, for panel builders and facility buyers.

The bottom line

JBVNL's bare-wire replacement should make Ranchi's LT network safer. In the short term it means planned outages of about two to six hours. Use that window to check changeover, ACB or MCCB incomers, MCBs and RCCBs, not only the generator.
