Industrial LED Lighting Upgrades

Treat lighting as engineering and maintenance — not a wattage sticker swap.

Industrial LED lighting upgrades succeed when they are treated as an engineering and maintenance project — not a bulb swap driven only by wattage stickers. This guide helps factory managers, electrical contractors and procurement teams in India plan LED upgrades for sheds, yards and commercial-industrial spaces, with notes relevant to sites across Ranchi, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Clarify the objective

Different stakeholders want different outcomes:

  • Finance wants lower energy invoices and fewer lamp replacements at height
  • Operations wants better visibility for safety and quality inspection
  • Maintenance wants durable drivers and accessible mounting

Write the primary objective down. A yard that only needs safe movement lighting should not be specified like a precision assembly bay.

Survey before you buy

  1. Measure or estimate mounting heights and existing fitting types.
  2. Note reflector condition and whether poles / trusses can take new weights.
  3. Map dark zones and glare complaints from operators.
  4. Record supply voltage stability issues — industrial sites with frequent surges punish cheap drivers.
  5. Check whether lighting DBs and MCBs are already overloaded with mixed loads.

Photographs of existing fittings and DB schedules speed up quotation and reduce wrong IP or mounting accessories.

Lux targets and uniformity (keep consultants in the loop)

Recommended illuminance depends on the task. Warehousing aisles, fabrication bays and packing tables are not the same. If you do not have a lighting design, at least avoid “same wattage everywhere.” Aim for uniformity so operators do not move between glare and shadow. For critical areas, ask a lighting designer or experienced contractor for a simple layout.

Product selection factors that matter on industrial sites

  • IP rating for dust and weather — sheds are rarely cleanrooms
  • IK / mechanical robustness where impact risk exists
  • Surge withstand expectations appropriate to the electrical environment
  • Beam angle for high-bay vs mid-bay vs task lighting
  • Colour temperature consistency across a hall (mixed CCT looks unprofessional and confuses inspection)
  • Serviceability — can drivers be replaced without replacing the whole housing?

Energy savings — talk numbers carefully

LED upgrades often reduce lighting load significantly versus older HID or inefficient fluorescents, but published “80% saving” claims are not universal. Savings depend on what you replace, hours of use, and whether controls (occupancy, daylight) are added. ATRICL will not invent ROI percentages. Track your own baseline kWh for lighting feeders when possible, then compare after commissioning.

Controls and zoning

Even without a full BMS, zoning lights by bay and using simple controls for rarely occupied stores can cut waste. Do not leave every high-bay on 24/7 because “it was always like that.” Coordinate control wiring during the upgrade shutdown.

Installation quality checklist

  • Correct glands and outdoor connectors for yard lights
  • Earthing continuity on poles and fixtures
  • Strain relief on hanging fittings
  • Labelling on lighting DB schedules after changes
  • Spare inventory of the exact driver / fitting family you standardised on

Phased upgrade strategy

Many plants cannot darken a whole shed at once. Phase by bay: standardise on one fitting family so spares stay simple. Avoid mixing five brands across one roof — maintenance cost rises even if purchase price looks lower.

How to enquire with ATRICL

Share area type (shed / yard / office), approximate quantity, mounting height, indoor/outdoor mix and photos. We supply lighting categories as part of electrical solutions for Jharkhand and Bihar buyers and will ask clarifying questions rather than guess.

FAQ

Should I match old wattage 1:1?

Not necessarily. LED efficacy differs; design for light output and distribution, then choose wattage.

Are higher lumen fixtures always better?

Too much glare or poorly aimed high lumens can reduce safety. Aim and optics matter.

Can lighting upgrades share a shutdown with CCTV work?

Often yes — coordinate access equipment and electrical isolation windows.

Electrical coordination during lighting upgrades

Lighting load reduction sometimes frees capacity on a DB — but only document that after measurement. Do not automatically add large new machine loads to a feeder because “LEDs saved power.” Update single-line notes and breaker schedules when circuits change. If you relocate lighting DBs, rethink cable sizes and gland entries rather than stretching old wires.

Surge devices and proper earthing of lighting poles in yards should be part of the same work order as fixture mounting. Separating “civil pole work” from “electrical termination” without a single owner creates gaps at handover.

Maintenance after commissioning

  • Keep a spares list: fitting model, driver model, mounting kit
  • Quarterly visual checks for water ingress on yard lights
  • Log early failures with date codes — patterns matter for warranty discussions with your supplier
  • Train one electrician on safe isolation of lighting circuits at height procedures used on your site

ATRICL can support follow-up supply when you standardise on a family; send the exact model references from your first phase.

Comparing quotes fairly

Ask every bidder for: fixture datasheet, claimed lumen output, CCT, IP, surge info, mounting accessories included, and spare driver policy. A quote that only lists “200W LED” is incomplete. Align apples-to-apples before choosing on price.

Include dismantling and disposal of old lamps in the work scope so mercury-containing waste (where applicable) is handled per your EHS rules — do not leave tubes in the yard.

Sample bay approach

Upgrade one representative bay first, measure operator feedback and lux if you can, then freeze the standard. Rolling out an untested fitting across an entire shed locks in regret.
